Speech on the importance of tree planting delivered by the program coordinator
Efforts are been made by JAP-F to promote tree planting in Kaduna and neighbouring state, in mitigating the effects of urbanization on the environment particularly in the area of climate change. However, it became necessary to assess the tree planting activities so as to properly place its achievements and positive contributions to the environment. The project aims to significantly enhance environmental sustainability and community well-being through extensive tree plantation efforts.
"JAP-F Annual Trees Planting" is an ambitious tree planting project aimed at planting trees to combat climate change, enhance biodiversity, and improve the quality of life in the communities. The project is a testament to JAP-F commitment to MDGs goal and sustainable development. For the past decade, JAP Foundation has embarked on Tree Planting Campaign, by distributing over 100,000 seedlings for planting and encouraging people to plant more trees in order to protect our environment.
The primary objectives of the project include:
To improve the quality of the natural environment.
To create awareness in rural and urban community and schools on the criticality of climate change and educate them about how tree planting can make a real difference.
To utilize barren lands for tree planting to improve soil and water conservation.
To improve water quality in local streams and ponds.
To protect groundwater supplies.
To reduce the damage to land cause by erosion, floods, landslides and other effects of ecological imbalance.
To conserve the ecosystem.
Key initiatives under the project include:
Tree Plantation: Planting a diverse native tree species across identified places in Paki and environs.
Community Engagement: Conducting awareness programs and involving local communities in planting and maintenance activities.
Sustainability Measures: Ensuring the survival and growth of planted trees through proper maintenance, irrigation, and protection measures.
The "Annual Trees Planting and Campaign" project has achieved significant outcomes with overall survival rate of 85.48%.
Environmental Impact: Over 30,000 trees planted, sequestering an estimated 112.87 tons of CO2 in the first year & potential of sequestering 4,156.41 Metric ton in the fifth year.
Land Restoration and Draught Resilience: Restoration of 768,384 (Seven hundred and sixty-eight thousand three hundred eighty-four) square feet of land, which will definitely benefit hugely to the environment and have tremendous potential in draught resilience.
Biodiversity Enhancement: Creation of new habitats and increased biodiversity in the planted areas. The newly planted species of tree are beneficial for butterflies’ life cycle, honeybees and nectar eating birds, also the plants will provide habitat and food to a large amount of fauna.
Community Benefits and Economic Benefits: Engaged community members, providing direct and indirect employment opportunities. Also, the fruit trees like mango, guava, moringa, pawpaw will definitely provide earning opportunities to a large number of beneficiaries.
Stakeholder Engagement: The project involved extensive stakeholder engagement, including partnerships with local schools, community groups, and government bodies. Regular meetings, workshops, and awareness campaigns were conducted to ensure community involvement and support.
